The Great Bath: The Ancient World's Most Extraordinary Public Structure
In the center of Mohenjo-daro — the largest city of the Indus Valley Civilization, buried for millennia under the plains of Sindh — there is a structure that modern engineers study with genuine admiration.
The Great Bath is a tank, approximately 12 metres long, 7 metres wide, and 2.4 metres deep, built from precisely fired brick, waterproofed with gypsum plaster on the interior walls and floor, and then sealed with a layer of natural bitumen — the same material used today to waterproof modern structures — to make it completely watertight. Around the bath, a colonnaded walkway. Attached to it, a series of smaller rooms that archaeologists believe were dressing rooms or ritual preparation spaces.
It was built approximately 4,500 years ago.
The level of engineering knowledge required to construct a waterproof tank of this scale at this date — the understanding of materials, the precision of construction, the organizational capacity to gather the workforce and resources and execute a project of this complexity — is extraordinary by any standard. It is more sophisticated than most contemporary construction in other parts of the world. The Romans, who are celebrated for their engineering, came 3,000 years later.
We do not know what the Great Bath was for. The most common interpretation is ritual or religious — a place for purification ceremonies, for sacred bathing, for the civic or priestly rites of a civilization whose religion we do not understand and whose texts we cannot read. Some scholars have suggested it was a municipal water resource. Some have proposed it was used for agricultural purposes. The debate continues because the Harappan script has not been decoded and the people who built and used the Great Bath left no explanation we can read.
What we know is that a civilization 4,500 years ago built a public waterproof tank of extraordinary engineering quality, in the center of one of the largest cities on earth, and that people came to it regularly for purposes that mattered to them deeply.
The MELŪ Luxury Hoodie carries the Great Bath as one of its graphic motifs — embroidered on the chest in the warm palette of the Harappan world, the stepped structure and its surrounding architecture reduced to a graphic that carries the weight of everything it represents.
Wear it knowing what it is. That is the entire point.
